How God Frees us from the Prisoners’ Dilemma
From Slate Magazine, a summary of a review article published in Science on the psychology of religious believers. My only quibble with the summary is that Denmark and Sweden are poor examples because of their relative homogeneity due to historically strict laws against immigration and naturalization. If these countries can maintain their “niceness” and atheism over the next decade, then they would be good example of nice atheist cultures. But the jury is still out for now.
The recurrence of scapegoating as a political strategy represents a Prisoners’ Dilemma of another kind. Is Christianity the only religion that offers a successful strategy for escaping that cycle of violence? Check out the First Things interview with Rene Girard, who pioneered this theory of Christianity.
Enjoy the weekend!
